Can a Tiny Sticker Solve the Global Food Crisis?

Sun-scorched fields and wilting produce are no match for Ryp Labs, where nature's genius meets scientific grit to fight food waste, one edible sticker at a time.

Written by Shayna Berglas

Back in 2019, a company called StixFresh caught the attention of judges at The Spoon’s Smart Kitchen Summit, winning the Startup Showcase competition with its innovative food-safe sticker. Fast forward to 2024, and StixFresh has rebranded as Ryp Labs, expanding its focus and capabilities in protecting crops after harvest.

Harnessing Nature's Solutions

At the core of Ryp Labs' technology is the concept of biomimicry—drawing inspiration from nature to develop innovative solutions. By capturing natural compounds emitted by plants that protect against disease and environmental hazards, Ryp Labs creates formulations that can be applied to a variety of surfaces to combat post-harvest disease and spoilage.

Tailored Solutions for Every Produce Type

Ryp Labs' flagship product, the StixFresh sticker, is designed for larger pieces of produce like apples, pears, avocados, and mangos. These stickers contain plant-produced compounds that vaporize to "cloak" the fruit, protecting it from bacteria and over-ripening. For smaller produce like berries, Ryp Labs utilizes sachets that emit protective vapors when dropped into a crate post-harvest.

Looking Towards the Future

With a focus on building a library of formulations, the company aims to protect everything from produce to poultry to freshly cut roses. By partnering with retailers and distributors, Ryp Labs is paving the way for a future where food waste is significantly reduced, and our planet is healthier.

Stay tuned as we continue to follow Ryp Labs' journey and celebrate the innovative solutions they're bringing to the world.
