New Year, New Planet 🌎

We’re just about halfway through January, and the climate action is only just beginning…

— Written by Shayna Berglas

As the NYE confetti settles and the resolutions bloom, something feels different this year. Maybe it's the lingering taste of climate anxiety, or the palpable buzz of environmental progress. Whatever the reason, 2024 feels like a pivotal year for our planet – a year where our collective green resolutions could blossom into real change.

Can we, amidst daily routines and deadlines, truly make a difference? The answer, in our minds, is a hopeful “yes”.

So, let's dive into some inspiring stories of change from 2023, proving that progress is possible:

  • From Plastic Plague to Green Paradise: The island of Boracay, once drowning in plastic waste, transformed into a sustainable haven in just six months. Strict regulations, community cleanups, and innovative recycling initiatives paved the way for crystal-clear waters and thriving coral reefs.

  • Sun Power Surge: In 2023, solar energy generation skyrocketed globally, exceeding fossil fuels in several countries. China, the world's largest emitter, saw a staggering 87% increase in solar capacity – a testament to the economic and environmental viability of renewable energy.

  • Trees Triumphant: Despite deforestation woes, a glimmer of hope emerged in 2023. Colombia successfully restored over 1 million hectares of degraded land, while Ethiopia's ambitious "Green Legacy" initiative saw the planting of 4 billion trees. These efforts remind us that even small steps can add up to large-scale forestation.

This year isn't just about individual actions – it's also about collective choices. 2024 is an election year in many countries, and the decisions made at the ballot box could have a profound impact on the trajectory of climate action.

So, how can you make your vote count?

  • Do your research: Learn about the candidates' positions on climate change. Ask questions, attend town halls, and consult unbiased sources of information.

  • Beyond the Big Names: Don't just focus on the presidential or national elections. Local and state elections can also have a significant impact on climate policy. Shoutout to our friends at Climate Cabinet – an awesome resource!

  • Make it a voting party: Get your friends and family involved! Organize voter registration drives, discuss the issues together, and encourage everyone to make their voices heard.

  • Stay informed: Follow reputable news sources and climate organizations to stay updated on the latest developments in the elections and climate policy.

By making informed choices at the ballot box and taking action in our everyday lives, we can turn 2024 into a turning point for climate. Let's make it a year where our vote becomes our voice, and our collective action becomes the catalyst for change.

Stay tuned, and stay green!

P.S. Reply and share your own green resolutions with us! Inspiration is contagious, let's spread it like wildfire (the good kind, of course).
