Pique Behind the Curtain Vol. 17

A newsletter for those who are interested in climate solutions, media and film production

Why Count Calories When You Can Count Carbon?

Welcome back to our weekly newsletter, Pique Behind the Curtain. If you’ve come in search of climate content, new film features, and all-around positive vibes, then you’ve come to the right place.

Joro

Let’s be clear on this, climate change is not your fault. But we can make decisions to help build a more sustainable world. This week we take a micro-approach to climate solutions by focusing on individual action and our own carbon footprints.

CEO and Founder Sanchali Pal started Joro as an extension of the sustainable practices that she used in her personal life. 33% of Americans are so concerned about climate change that they want to do something on a daily or weekly basis - but it can be extremely overwhelming. It’s difficult to know where to start, or what will actually make a difference.

Joro helps people decarbonize their lives by tracking, reducing, and offsetting the emissions of everything they buy. The best part? It’s a free mobile app downloadable from the App Store, so you can carry your sustainable solution in your pocket.

Sneak Pique

Next week we hear from Epic Cleantec, a company that converts building wastewater into three outputs: clean water, soil products, and recovered wastewater heat energy.

The goal? To produce an extremely high quality water that will then recirculate back into the building for non-drinking uses like toilet flushing, irrigation, cooling towers, or laundry, helping a building to reuse anywhere from 50% to 95% of their water right on site. No 💩!

Dr. Katherine Hayhoe Teaches Us How to Talk to People Who Don’t Believe in Climate Change - Jimmy Kimmel

Climate Scientist Dr. Hayhoe talks about living in Texas, how the issue of climate change became an issue of political affiliation, the spread of disinformation, and how to communicate with someone who doesn’t believe in climate change.

Good Climate News!

This week in good climate news 🌍:

The Biden administration has recently revoked mining leases near Minnesota Boundary Waters Wildnerness. The area provides habitat for thousands of species, including the grey wolf and Canada lynx. A proposed study could lead to a 20-year long ban on mining in the area, securing a win for the local environmental activists who have been fighting to keep waterways clean of the harsh metals associated with this industrial practice.

Every week we share recommendations from readers about climate films and documentaries to watch. This week’s rec comes from Carly Pandit.

  • Mission Blue is a film about the life’s work of Sylvia Earle, an oceanographer who has dedicated her life to documenting and safeguarding our planet’s oceans. Through her eyes we explore the underwater world, how it’s changed, and why it is worth protecting.
