Pique Behind the Curtain Vol. 20

A newsletter for those who are interested in climate solutions, media and film production

Women’s Pique Performance

Welcome to this week’s edition of Pique Behind the Curtain, our weekly newsletter debuting new content, highlighting great storytelling, and sharing behind-the-scenes footage from our films.

International Women's Day

Imagine a world that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive for all genders - a world free from the individual and collective biases against women that fuel gender inequality.

Yesterday was International Women’s Day, a time during Women’s History Month to celebrate the cultural, political, and socioeconomic achievements of women all over the world.

We’d like to dedicate this week’s newsletter to #breakingthebias and share some of the incredible women Founders, Co-Founders, CSOs, CFOs, and CEOs who are making an impact in climate.

Zora Chung, Co-Founder and CFO of ReJoule

ReJoule helps fight climate change by streamlining the battery's value chain and optimizing it over its life cycle. Their advanced technology is able to gather data that no other system can today so that we can actually set a new standard in battery diagnostics.

Louise Parlons Bentata, Co-Founder and CEO of Bluemethane

Hydropower is critical to the world’s transition to clean energy - it already represents 37% of total U.S. renewable electricity generation - but at the same time - dams emit 13 million tons of methane per year.

Bluemethane is creating technology to extract that methane from the water before it is transferred into the atmosphere.

Monika Jha, Founder of Cydee Technologies

Monika Jha saw the social effects of energy poverty up close: the lack of reliable street lighting made it unsafe to go out at night, theft was abundant & emissions were high.

So she invented a new lighting concept that saves money & reduces energy. With high dispersion LED lighting concepts, three Cydee lights can replace five conventional lights to illuminate the same stretch of road.

Christina Reynolds, Co-Founder and CSO of Remora

The 2 million semi-trucks in the US move 70% of all goods across the country. This is responsible for nearly 5% of the country’s emissions.

Remora retrofits diesel semi-trucks by mounting their device between the tractor and its trailer, attaching to its tailpipes, and capturing at least 80% of its carbon emissions.

Britta Winterberg, Co-Founder and CSO of Formo

Dairy is responsible for 4% of global GHG emissions, roughly equivalent to the whole aviation and shipping industry. Formo is a cellular agriculture startup that develops cultivated dairy products through precision fermentation.

Through this innovative scientific approach, Formo is ensuring that the future of food is sustainable, scalable, and tasty.

Sanchali Pal, Founder and CEO of Joro

65% of global emissions are directly influenced by household consumption. Our daily activities - the ways that we eat, shop, socialize - all of those things have a carbon impact.

Joro is on a mission to bring a sense of personal awareness to that impact.

Kathy Hannun, Founder and President of Dandelion Energy

While working at Google X, Kathy Hannun saw the potential for geothermal energy.

Inspired by the abundant and cost-effective nature of the ground’s heat, she set out to make this natural resource available to anyone who wants it.

Sneak Pique

Next week we get buzzin’ about beans - coffee beans, that is.

In about 30 years, we stand to lose around ½ of the land where we currently grow coffee.

Compound Foods is reinventing the fermentation process to create coffee without the beans. This means a morning cup of joe with up to 90% fewer carbon emissions and less water waste involved than the traditional process.

Good Climate News!

This week in good climate news 🌍:

The countries of the United Nations have agreed to form a legal framework to address plastic pollution in the world’s waters and landscapes. The decision was made in a unianimous vote on Wednesday in Nairobi, Kenya as a resolution to protect our Earth from the effects of plastic pollution.

This agreement will kick off international negotiations that are designed to produce a treaty by 2024. A strong global stance against plastic pollution is an important step towards a greener, cleaner world!
