Pipe Dreams No More: Cleaner Cars Are Coming

The existing tailpipe standards were simply not doing enough to address these concerns.

The New Standards

The EPA's new rules will require automakers to produce vehicles with dramatically lower emissions by model year 2032. This translates to a reduction in planet-warming greenhouse gasses by up to 50% compared to current standards. The new rules also target smog-forming pollutants and soot particles, leading to cleaner air overall. 

Facing Opposition: While many environmental and health organizations applaud the stricter standards, there has been some pushback from the auto industry. A group of 25 attorneys general from various states recently filed a lawsuit challenging the EPA's authority to implement these regulations.

Industry Concerns Debunked: The auto industry argues that the new standards are too stringent and will be too expensive to meet. However, experts counter that these concerns may be overstated. A recent study by BloombergNEF suggests that the industry can achieve the required emission reductions with existing technologies, without a significant impact on vehicle costs.

The health benefits of cleaner air are undeniable. By reducing emissions, the new standards are expected to prevent thousands of premature deaths, asthma attacks, and other health problems each year. This translates to a healthier population and lower healthcare costs overall.
