ConocoPhillips' Willow Project is a massive, multi-decade oil drilling project on Alaska's North Slope that the state's lawmakers claim will increase domestic energy output and create jobs. Environmental organizations, however, have remained steadfastly opposed to it due to the environmental impact of hundreds of millions of barrels of carbon pollution it would release. Now, the hashtag #STOPWILLOW is trending, having amassed 50 million views just last week.

And the attention is with good reason. One of the most significant fronts in the battle against climate change is America's Western Arctic. This 23 million-acre vast wilderness, also known as the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska, is home to an abundance of animals and Indigenous cultures that have flourished in the area for millennia. This dynamic habitat makes up about 1% of the U.S. mainland and is about the size of Virginia. It supports a variety of wildlife and provides resources for Native Alaskan people.

Willow would produce more annual greenhouse gas emissions than 99.7% of all single-point sources in the nation — more than 280 million metric tons of climate pollution, is predicted to be released into the atmosphere over the course of the next 30 years if the oil from Willow is burned. To put it simply, we cannot afford the climate calamity that is Willow.
