Weather Whiplash: El Niño Fades, La Niña Looms

The weather can be a fickle beast, and this year is proving no exception. We like to keep you informed about the latest climate trends, and this month, we're diving into a bit of a weather whiplash situation.

El Niño Takes a Bow

Many of you may remember our previous report on the strong El Niño event that was expected to last through winter 2024. Well, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), El Niño is officially on its way out.

La Niña Steps Up

While El Niño fades, its cooler counterpart, La Niña, is expected to take center stage in the coming months. Forecasts suggest a 60% chance of La Niña conditions developing in July through September 2024. La Niña is often associated with cooler and wetter weather patterns in some regions, but it's important to remember that these impacts can vary greatly depending on location.

The Heat is Still On

Here's the surprising twist: despite the transition to La Niña, higher-than-average temperatures are still expected across much of the globe this summer, including parts of the United States. This is likely due to the lingering effects of El Niño and long-term global warming trends.

A Word of Caution

While El Niño may be fading, climate experts warn that a return to La Niña doesn't necessarily guarantee a return to normal weather patterns. The complex interplay between the atmosphere and ocean continues to evolve, and the long-term effects of climate change add another layer of uncertainty.

Stay Informed

We'll continue to monitor the situation and provide updates on how La Niña might impact different regions. In the meantime, you can stay informed by checking out the resources below:

Brass Tacks: It’s in the name - climate change - weather will continue to get weirder. Even with a La Niña on the horizon, it's still important to be prepared for a variety of weather conditions this summer. Stay safe and cool out there!
